GRE vs GMAT 2024-2025: Which Test for MBA & Business School?
The question isn't "which is easier?" — it's "which test matches your profile AND target schools' preferences?"
As of 2024, ~90% of MBA programs accept both. But "accept" ≠ "indifferent." Some schools have subtle preferences, and the tests reward different skills.
Verbal Reasoning
Choose GRE if: Strong vocabulary, fast short-passage synthesis.
Choose GMAT if: Strong logical reasoning, argument evaluation.
Quantitative Reasoning
GMAT Quant is harder per question but fewer questions. GRE Quant has QC (no equivalent).
Data Insights (Unique to GMAT)
GMAT Focus Data Insights (20q, 45m): Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphics Interpretation, Table Analysis, Two-Part Analysis.
GRE has NO equivalent. GRE Data Analysis is integrated in Quant only.
If you dislike data interpretation: GRE avoids a dedicated DI section.
ETS and GMAC publish an unofficial comparison tool (not a formal concordance):
Use comparison tool on ETS.org: ets.org/gre/institutions/convert (enter GRE → GMAT estimate)
Not interchangeable: Schools don't convert. They evaluate within context.
Take Both Diagnostics (Free/Low-Cost)
- GRE: POWERPREP Test 1 (free, 2h)GMAT Focus: GMAT Official Practice Exam (free via mba.com)
Decision Matrix
Choose GRE if 3+ apply:
- [ ] Strong vocabulary (TC/SE 80%+ on diagnostic)
- [ ] Prefer on-screen calculator for Quant
- [ ] Applying beyond business school (GRE broader acceptance)
- [ ] Like section-adaptive (recovery possible within section)
- [ ] GRE Diagnostic percentile > GMAT percentile by ≥10
Choose GMAT Focus if 3+ apply:
- [ ] Strong logical reasoning (CR 80%+)
- [ ] Strong Data Insights (DI comfort)
- [ ] Applying only to business school
- [ ] Prefer question-adaptive (like challenge)
- [ ] GMAT Diagnostic percentile > GRE percentile by ≥10
Tiebreaker: Choose test where careless errors fewer → indicates better cognitive fit.
Percentage accepting GRE (2024):
- US Top 25 MBA: 95-100% accept GRE
- Global Top 50: 90-95% accept GRE
- Europe/Asia: Slightly lower (80-90%), GMAT historically dominant
- Specialized Master's (MSF, MIM): GRE often MORE accepted than GMAT
Nuance: "Accept" vs "Media Score Reported"
- Schools publish average GMAT (more historical data) even when GRE accepted
- Lack of published GRE average ≠ disadvantage — data thinner
- Some schools (e.g., Harvard, Stanford) publish median GRE now
Ask admissions directly: "Do you have a preference? What was median GRE for last admitted class?"
- GRE = Vocab + calculator + section-adaptive. GMAT = Logic + DI + question-adaptive.~90% of MBA programs accept both — but verify your specific targetsVocab is the GRE's unique demand — if you hate vocab, choose GMATDI is the GMAT's unique demand — if you hate data, choose GREDiagnostics > opinions — take both free practice tests
