Japan MEXT Scholarship: Embassy Application and University Matching

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarship programs in the world. Administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the scholarship covers full tuition, a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare between Japan and your home country, and health insurance.

The MEXT Scholarship offers three types of programs:

The most popular program for international graduates is the Research Student program, which allows students to conduct research under a Japanese professor at a Japanese university for 1.5 to 5 years depending on the program.

Application Process

The MEXT Scholarship application begins at the Japanese Embassy in your home country:

3. Submit to embassy by the deadline (typically April-May)

4. Written examination (if required by embassy)

5. Interview at the embassy

University Placement

Unlike some scholarships that require you to have a pre-arranged university placement, the MEXT Scholarship provides university placement through its recommendation system. After passing the embassy screening, MEXT matches recommended candidates with Japanese universities that have quotas under the MEXT recommendation system.

However, it is strongly recommended to identify potential research supervisors and universities before applying. Contacting professors whose research aligns with your interests can significantly strengthen your application and increase the likelihood of being placed at your preferred university.
