Netherlands DigiD for New Residents: Activation and Safe Use

DigiD is the Dutch government's personal login for public services on participating websites. It is used for tax, municipality, health-insurance, student and other services that require authenticated access. It is not a residence permit, bank identity, or shared account. Follow only digid.nl instructions and protect the activation code.

Who can get a DigiD

You generally need a citizen service number (BSN) and a registered address where the activation letter can be received by post. New residents usually receive the BSN via municipal registration; only afterwards does a DigiD request make sense. The current eligibility page on digid.nl states the exact conditions.

Request, activation and added methods

1. Request the login on digid.nl with your own BSN, date of birth, address and contact details. Use an email and phone you control alone.
2. Wait for the activation letter or code; activation must be completed within the window stated in the letter (often around three weeks). If it expires, request a new letter.
3. Activate via the method listed in your letter — often the DigiD app (with ID check) or letter code plus SMS verification. Older SMS-only methods are being phased towards the app where supported.
4. Add a second method (app + SMS) where available and test login on a service you actually need.
5. Sign out on shared devices and store recovery details offline. Never share your password, code or app approval.

Keeping the account safe

• The government will not ask for your DigiD password or code by phone or SMS link. A message with a look-alike domain is phishing.
• Do not let an employer, landlord or consultant keep control of your account. Create and hold it yourself.
• Apply well before a tax, benefits or enrolment deadline — postal delivery and activation take days and cannot be expedited on request.

Recovery and help

If a letter is lost, the phone number changed, or the account is suspected compromised, use the recovery flow on digid.nl and then contact DigiD help through the address published there. Keep the registered address current — many codes are postal.

Caveats that matter

Eligibility, delivery method, app features and recovery rules change. Some municipalities and services offer English pages, many do not. Contact DigiD through its official help pages if a letter is lost or an account is compromised.
