Nigeria JAMB UTME: Profile Code, Direct Entry, and Result Verification

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) controls the UTME and Direct Entry workflow that precedes admission to Nigerian tertiary institutions. The bulletin for the relevant year is the only authority for profile-code method, fees, centres, required credentials, and examination rules — reusing last year's instructions is a leading cause of disqualification.

Bulletin first, then profile code

1. Read the year's official bulletin and the profile-code instruction. The board periodically changes the creation channel (for example SMS-to-number with NIN) — follow the current bulletin line for line.
2. Create the required JAMB profile code through the stated channel. Keep the phone number you used; it is tied to the profile for later result and CAPS steps.
3. Use only an accredited CBT centre for registration and biometrics. Cybercafés and copied payment links are not valid even if they look official. Verify the centre list on jamb.gov.ng.

Registration and subject choices

Review the institution and programme requirements before final submission. The bulletin and the brochure list the subject combination per course — choosing a mismatched combination makes the result unusable for that course even with a high score. For O-level, the bulletin states which sittings and subjects are permitted, and whether awaiting results is allowed that cycle.

Direct Entry where it applies

Direct Entry candidates follow a separate checklist: ND/NCE/IJMB/JUPEB or equivalent as stated, with verification evidence from the awarding body. Do not select both UTME and DE for the same cycle where prohibited.

CAPS, admission and result checks

JAMB's CAPS (Central Admissions Processing System) records admission status, and institutions make offers through it. Accept or reject only on JAMB's official CAPS service, then follow the institution's acceptance, clearance and payment process. Check UTME results only on the official result service — third-party result-check sites may show outdated or fabricated information.

Documents to prepare

• National identity evidence (where required for profile/NIN linkage).
• O-level results and permitted result details; keep result checker cards or online verification codes per the bulletin.
• Email, phone and profile-code records — keep the SIM active until admission closes.
• Direct Entry qualification documents where that route applies.

Common mistakes

• Paying at an unapproved centre or via a copied link.
• Choosing a course without checking the institution's current requirements and cut-off policy.
• Sharing profile codes, passwords or one-time passwords with a café attendant.
• Using a prior year's fee schedule and therefore making an underpayment that blocks completion.

Caveats that matter

JAMB sets the operative calendar, fees, centres and subject rules each cycle. A result does not guarantee admission — institutions apply post-UTME screening and the course, quota and catchment rules still apply. Verify everything on jamb.gov.ng and the institution's current prospectus.
