UPI makes everyday payments quick, but speed makes mistakes expensive. India processed over 16 billion UPI transactions per month in 2025 (NPCI data). With that volume, scams have become more sophisticated.
The safest habit is pausing before approving any transaction and remembering one golden rule: receiving money never requires entering your UPI PIN.

The Golden Rule of UPI Safety

If someone asks you to enter your UPI PIN to "receive" money, it is a scam. Your UPI PIN only authorizes outgoing payments. No legitimate transaction requires your PIN for receiving funds.

How the Most Common Scams Work

1. QR Code Scams

A scammer sends you a QR code asking you to scan it to "receive" money. In reality, scanning a QR code and entering your PIN sends money FROM your account.
Protection: Never scan a QR code to receive money. QR codes are for paying, not receiving. Check the amount and payee name carefully before confirming.

2. Collect Request Scams

Someone sends a UPI collect request disguised as a payment to you. They may claim "I accidentally sent you money, please approve this request to return it."
Protection: Never approve a collect request from someone you do not know. A collect request is asking YOU to pay THEM. If someone says they sent money by mistake, ask them to contact their bank.

3. Screen Sharing / Remote Access Scams

The scammer asks you to install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk, TeamViewer) to "help resolve a payment issue." Once they see your screen, they guide you through transferring money.
Protection: Never install screen-sharing apps at a stranger's request. Banks never ask for remote access software. If you get a call claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call the number on your card.

4. Fake Customer Care / Refund Scams

You receive a call saying your UPI transaction failed and you need to "verify" details for a refund. They ask for OTP, UPI PIN, or ask you to click a link.
Protection: Banks never ask for UPI PIN, OTP, or passwords over phone or message. Check your bank statement directly. For failed transactions, contact your bank through official channels only.

5. Fake Payment Confirmation Screenshots

Scammers send doctored screenshots showing a "payment made" to convince you they paid. You ship the product, but no money arrives.
Protection: Always verify in YOUR UPI app's transaction history. Never trust screenshots. Wait for the "payment received" notification from YOUR bank.

6. UPI ID Phishing

Messages like "Your UPI account will be blocked. Click here to verify" with suspicious links lead to fake pages that steal credentials.
Protection: Never click UPI-related links in SMS or WhatsApp. UPI apps never send links asking for credentials. Block and report such messages.

Practical Safety Checklist

Before Every Transaction

  • Verify the payee name matches who you intend to pay
  • Double-check the amount (typos are the most common accidental loss)
  • Ensure you are on a secure network (avoid public Wi-Fi for financial transactions)
  • Keep your UPI app updated to the latest version

Account Security

  • Use a strong UPI PIN (avoid birthdates, phone numbers, simple sequences)
  • Enable transaction alerts for all UPI transactions
  • Set daily transaction limits appropriate to your usage
  • Link only one bank account to UPI if possible (limit exposure)
  • Never share UPI PIN, OTP, or bank passwords with anyone

If Something Goes Wrong

  1. Immediately lock your UPI app or block your bank account through the app
  2. Call your bank's official customer care number (not from the scammer's message)
  3. File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal: https://cybercrime.gov.in/
  4. Call the cybercrime helpline: 1930
  5. Report on the UPI app's dispute resolution feature
  6. File an FIR at your local police station if significant money is involved

UPI Transaction Limits and Safety

Most UPI apps default to per-transaction limits of 1 Lakh and daily limits of 1-5 Lakh. You can reduce these limits in your UPI app settings. If you mostly make small payments (under 5,000), consider lowering your limit to cap potential losses.

RBI Protections and Your Rights

The RBI has established rules for unauthorized electronic transactions:
  • Liability cap: If you report within 3 business days, liability is minimal. After 3 days, liability increases.
  • Bank obligation: Banks must credit disputed amounts within 10 working days if the transaction was unauthorized.
  • Ombudsman: If your bank does not resolve the complaint, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman through the CMS portal.

The key to claiming protection is reporting quickly. Delay weakens your position.
