CAT 2026 Preparation: Complete Strategy to Crack IIM Admission

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's premier management entrance examination, conducted by one of the IIMs on a rotational basis. It is the gateway to 21 IIMs and over 100 other top B-schools. Over 2.5 lakh candidates appear annually for roughly 5,000 IIM seats.

Section-Wise Strategy

VARC

Read diverse material daily. Focus on philosophy and economics passages (hardest for engineers). For Para Jumbles: find the independent sentence first. For Para Summary: eliminate options that are too narrow, too broad, or off-topic. Practice 10-15 VA questions daily.

DILR

This is the make-or-break section. Scan all sets first (2-3 min), then tackle the easiest. Draw diagrams, tables systematically. Practice 2-3 sets daily under timed conditions (15-20 min per set).

QA

Start with arithmetic (highest weightage and most scorable). For Geometry: know all formulas, practice diagram-based problems. Practice 15-20 questions daily.

Beyond CAT: IIM Admission

CAT score is only part of the picture. IIMs use composite scores:
